Job Description

full-time (1.0 FTE - 80 hours per payperiod) As Scheduled Job Summary: To provide transport and Basic Life Support care in the Prehospital setting to include wheelchair or stretcher van transports and ambulance transports of non-emergency or emergency patients as directed by the WAASC dispatcher or the Lycoming County Communications Center. The technical skills of an Emergency Medical Technician are necessary to provide patient assessment and care at the Basic Life Support level to patients of all age groups. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge of Basic Life Support emergency care. Knowledge and skill to use Basic Life Support equipment to administer patient care. Knowledge of Prehospital safety hazards (including hazardous materials) and precautions to establish a reasonably safe work environment. Skill to apply and modify techniques of Basic Life Support. Skill to safely operate an emergency vehicle and/or ambulance under routine or emergency conditions. Knowledge and skill to use all necessary equipment associated with the Emergency Medical Technician job. Skill to maintain state mandated paperwork and other paperwork associated with the job. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationship with patients, other hospital staff, nursing home staff, and the general public. Ability to hear and communicate effectively. Ability to lift patients on a frequent basis during a scheduled day. Ability to react calmly and effectively in an emergency. Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Completion of an approved Emergency Medical Technician course which follows the National Standard Curriculum. Experience: Previous ambulance and/or hospital experience. License/Certification/Registration: Valid Pennsylvania Driver's license. Current certification in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Certification of completion of a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Health approved Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC). Current CPR certification. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients on liters. Requires lifting and carrying 50 to 100 pounds repetitively during the day; this also includes pushing and pulling of a litter at 32-36 inch height with a 200 pound patient and one person to assist. Requires kneeling, balancing, stooping, standing, walking, climbing and ascending/descending stairs occasionally while pushing / pulling, controlling a litter with the same 200 pound patient. Requires sustained crouching or sitting with forward flexion of low back. Requires depth perception, eye/hand coordination, and finger dexterity. Requires reaching for and lifting objects over 10 pounds and then carry for a distance. Requires occasional lifting over 100 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range and color vision. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Requires some exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids. Requires effective verbal and written communication. Ability to operate an Emergency Vehicle. *ENVIRONMENT - Indoors/Emergency Department. Multiple site assignments including Prehospital setting. Outdoors including inclement weather. Travel as needed. *SCHEDULING - Hours scheduled may include weekdays, weekends, holidays. Work schedule may be affected by emergencies. *HEALTH HAZARDS - Blood and Body fluids and airborne hazards - standards and precautions are available and mandated. Work near or around hazardous materials or environments - standards and precautions are available and mandated. Exposure to environmental conditions. Drive emergency vehicles. Work near or around hostile situations and occasionally and unknowingly enter hostile environments; standards and precautions to reduce risks are available and mandated.
