Job Description

per diem As Scheduled Job Summary: This work is technical in nature, involving those tasks pertaining to the processing and preparation of surgical specimens as well as assisting with autopsies and autopsy specimens. These tasks are performed under the general direction of Lab Manager and Pathologists. The histology technician/technologist is expected to perform a variety of procedures with the knowledge and ability to produce superior microscopic slides for use in diagnosis by the Pathologist. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge of medical equipment related to Histology, Gross Pathology and the morgue. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions (OSHA guidelines). Ability to communicate clearly and interpret guidelines. Ability to maintain patient confidentiality. Education: Associate's Degree or Bachelor's in Science field (unless previously certified.) Experience: Histology experience preferred. License/Certification/Registration: HT (ASCP) Certified or eligible. (If not certified must successfully pass Histology certification exam within 24 months of employment.) Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Requires standing, sitting, and/or walking for long periods of time. Ability to stoop & bend to assist Pathologist. Necessary to assist in the lifting and moving of cadaver and be able to handle containers weighing up to 50 lbs. Visual acuity and manual dexterity to operate equipment. Able to communicate verbally with patients, staff and physicians. Stressful environment, with frequent exposure to unpleasant odors and sights. Exposure to infectious and hazardous materials.
