Job Description
full-time (1.0 FTE - 80 hours per payperiod) Days Job Summary To provide patient care within the realm and licensure of a physician assistant. To perform diagnostic and therapeutic tasks under the direction and supervision of the surgeon to allow the physician to extend his services. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Knowledge of professional theory and practice to give and evaluate patient care. Knowledge of organizational policies, procedures and standards to administer patient care. Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Skills in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of physician assistant to provide ongoing primary patient care. Skill in identifying problems and recommend solutions. Skill in written communication. Skill in developing and maintaining quality improvement. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, co-workers, physician and hospital staff. Ability to maintain quality standards. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures. Ability to communicate clearly. Ability to write, read, speak and comprehend the English language. Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information. Ability to assist physician with office visits and procedures. Ability to collaborate with physicians, nursing, and other hospital personnel to insure the delivery of smooth, coordinated, quality patient care. Education Graduation from an AMA approved Physician Assistant/Surgical Assistant program. Bachelor of Science degree preferred. BLS/ACLS. Orthopedic Surgery Specific Competencies: 1. Knowledge of pre-existing medical conditions that may affect surgical procedure. 2. Working knowledge of orthopedic surgical procedures and anatomy. 3. Basic understanding of major surgical complications and their treatment. 4. Knowledge of surgical patient post operative management. 5. Assessment and treatment of patients with acute musculoskeletal injuries. Experience Experience in Orthopedic Surgery preferred. License/Certification/Registration Current Pennsylvania license as a Medical Physician Assistant from the Pennsylvania State Board of Medical Examiners and Licensure. Certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Professional Affiliations Maintain current Pennsylvania licensure and Federal Certification. Equipment Utilized Telephone, All medical equipment, Personal computer, Office equipment, Surgical instruments/Equipment, Pager Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Requires prolonged periods standing in the Operating Room. Requires ability to distinguish letters and symbols. Requires normal vision, hearing and ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Health hazards are: contact with blood, blood products or body fluids. Risks are minimal if Exposure Control Plan and Policy are adhered to in a work day. Exposure protection available and mandated. Must be able to work long hours. Will be scheduled to work various shifts according to the needs of the Orthopedic Surgery case schedule. On-call coverage required-weekdays/weekends/holidays. Additional hours may be required. Overtime is an essential job function for this position in order to meet the needs of our patients. The inability to perform overtime could result in termination.
