Job Description

per diem As Scheduled Job Summary: To provide Advanced Life Support to critically ill or injured patients in the prehospital setting. Perform history and physical examinations to assemble the clinical manifestations of the patient in order to provide the appropriate treatment and care for patients in the prehospital setting. These essential functions will be provided often as an independent care provider and in unpredictable, often challenging or hazardous conditions. The paramedic will communicate effectively with other healthcare professionals, other emergency services agencies and families. The paramedic will manage patient care as a single provider and assure the appropriateness of assessment and treatment that is age specific. Perform interfacility transports of acutely and/or critically ill patients and be able to manage the patient through monitoring and treatment during extended periods of time in transit. Be able to accurately document patient conditions and follow protocols when necessary. Paramedics may endotracheally intubate or initiate IV fluids within their scope of practice in emergency situations in the Emergency Department when stationed at a SH facility. Provide public service programs to the community and stand-by assignments at local events. Advanced Life Support care is provided in an unpredictable environment with unknown resources available. Provide educational instruction to student Paramedics on prehospital advanced life support calls and transports in the prehospital setting. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge of Prehospital Advanced Life Support System. Evaluation and delivery of emergency care to patients. Knowledge of the Paramedic scope of practice. Operation of advanced medical equipment and instruments to provide emergency care. Complete understanding of the SHS and regional Emergency Medical System operation. Awareness of common safety hazards, recognition and identification of hazardous materials. Responsiveness required to establish a reasonably safe working environment. The skills necessary in identifying life threatening injuries and illnesses, and correcting or stabilizing the patient. Preparation and completion of state-mandated patient charts and other related documentation to preventative maintenance, CQI of patient charts, quality assurance of equipment used for patient care and rescue needs. Establishing and maintaining an effective working relationship with patients, physicians and other outside agencies. Maintaining a positive image in representing the department and Susquehanna Health in the public setting. Ability to communicate effectively to patients, professionals and the public the Paramedic interacts with. Communication of patient conditions and treatment information to the Medical Command Physician. Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency conditions. Proper use of established protocols to treat patients immediately. The ability to lift and move patients. Ability to hear clearly. Ensure emergency vehicles are operated in a safe manner. The ability to provide Advanced Life Support to acutely ill and injured patients in a hazardous or hostile environment. Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Graduate of an AMA/CAAHEP-accredited Paramedic Training Program or a state approved Paramedic Training Program or Accredited Educational Facility. Experience: One year of Prehospital ALS emergency care preferred. License/Certification/Registration: (THESE MUST BE COMPLETE). Valid Pennsylvania Driver's license. Certified by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a Paramedic. National Registry as an EMT-Paramedic obtained within one year of hire. Current certification as a BCLS and ACLS Provider. Certification of completion of a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Health approved EVOC course. Sixteen hour High Angle/Rope Rescue Class preferred. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Requires full range of motion including handling and lifting patients on litters. Requires lifting and carrying of 50 to 100 pounds repetitively during a day, including pushing and pulling of a litter at 32 to 36 inch height with a 200 pound patient and one person to assist. Requires kneeling, balancing, stooping, standing, walking, climbing, including ascending and descending stairs occasionally while pushing/pulling/controlling a litter or seat/lift with same 200 pound patient, depth perception, eye/hand coordination and finger dexterity. Requires sustained crouching or sitting with forward flexion of low back. Requires reaching for and lifting objects over 10 pounds and then carrying for a distance. Requires occasional lifting over 100 pounds. Requires hearing and oral communication abilities in order to use phone or two-way radio to communicate. ENVIRONMENT: Multiple site assignments, including prehospital setting. Outdoors, including inclement weather. SCHEDULING: Days and nights as necessary. Nights, weekends and holidays when required to meet department needs. Changes in work schedule may occur on occasions as needed. 12 hour shifts with scheduled and occasionally unscheduled overtime. HEALTH HAZARDS: Blood and body fluids and airborne hazards - standards and precautions are available and mandated. Work near or around hazardous materials or environments - standards and precautions are available and mandated. Exposure to environmental conditions. Drive emergency vehicles. Work near or around hostile situations and occasionally unknowingly enter hostile environments - standards and precautions to reduce risks are available and mandated.
