Job Description
full-time (1.0 FTE - 80 hours per payperiod) As Scheduled Job Summary: To perform scrub role functions during surgery and/or procedures in the Operating Room. To provide support functions in the preparation and cleaning of supplies and equipment for use in surgery. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Demonstrated knowledge of surgical technique and asepsis maintenance as applies to the Surgical Technician role. Skill in scrub function at basic level for all surgical procedures to include general surgery, plastics, ob/gyn, retinal, orthopedic, ENT, CV, neurosurgery, and urology. Ability to learn and retain procedural didactic and applied information for these cases and more complicated surgical procedures. Ability to learn and retain information, including resource locations, for cleaning and processing supplies. Ability and willingness to take direction from the circulating professional nurse. Ability to interact positively with all members of the surgical team. Developed skill in operation of standard saws, drills, microscopes, irrigation systems, cautery units, and other identified O.R. equipment. Ability to work on feet for long hours in one location. Ability to develop commitment to Total Quality Improvement concept based on exceeding customer expectations. Ability to use telecommunications equipment in the Operating Room. Education: Graduation from an approved program in surgical technology. Successful completion of departmental orientation program. Can read, write, and follow direction. Understands written and spoken English. Experience: Operating Room experience preferred. Previous health care experience preferred. License/Certification/Registration: Certification as a Surgical Technician is preferred. Please refer to addendum for annual educational requirements. Within the first 90 days of employment, must obtain a current and valid card for completion of the American Heart Association Basic Life Support Course. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Requires full range of body motion. Required walking for prolonged periods with pushing of patients on litters. Requires ability to lift and assist in patient movement. Requires standing for up to periods of 4 to 5 hours at a time. Requires stooping, bending, pulling, and handling of equipment and instrumentation using hand and finger coordination. Requires ability to discern colors. Required ability to keep a fast pace with the other staff members. Requires ability to wear a face mask and hair covering during entire shift, if necessary. Requires ability to wear protective eye wear, as necessary. Lifting up to 50-60 lbs on to carts, shelves, etc. for short periods. Lifting with assist devices up to 250-275 lbs with the assistance of 2 other personnel. Carrying up to 25 lbs. Pushing litters with patients up to 250-275 lbs by self. Pushing wheeled equipment up to 200 lbs. Work in a temperature controlled area. Must wear surgical garb which includes mask, hat, and shoe covers. Requires good personal hygiene. Work sites will vary. Environment can be high stress at times. Shifts are days with rotation, unless assigned permanent shifts, plus weekends and holidays. Call may be assigned, as needed. The work schedule is dependent on patient care needs including emergency and disaster situations. Exposure to body fluids. Exposure to waste products from the surgical procedure. Exposure to used surgical linen. Exposure to radiation. Exposure to trace anesthetic gases. Exposure to cleaning agents and germicides. Risk is minimal if protocol is adhered to in the work situation. Protective attire is provided.
