Job Description

per diem As Scheduled Job Summary: Responsible for the prompt processing of inpatients and outpatients for specimen collection. Assume the responsibility for safety and comfort of patients following established standards and practices. Responsible for the delivery of specimens to the laboratory. Recognize various age related needs and provides age appropriate care as indicated. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Develop knowledge of all current phlebotomy equipment utilized by SH labs. Ability to understand and comprehend written and oral instructions and procedures and be able to use the English language to communicate. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age appropriate care (neonate/pediatric/adolescent/geriatric) to patients serviced. Maintain knowledge of the hospital and laboratory information systems. Ability to work independently in an organized fashion. Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Develop skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. Ability to assess and/or provide age-specific data as necessary and related to job responsibilities. Education: High school graduate or equivalent required, Phlebotomy School preferred. Experience: Previous phlebotomy experience preferred. Completion of on-the-job training. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Requires fine motor coordination and dexterity of upper extremities. Requires prolonged standing and walking with frequent bending, stooping, and stretching. Can require lifting up to 50 pounds and assisting with the movement of patients by wheelchair. Requires visual acuity and ample hearing. Requires ability to walk quickly from one end of the hospital to the other to respond to emergencies. 24 hour service including weekends, and holidays. Exposure to communicable disease, blood borne pathogens and hazardous chemical.
